Process server in
Ingham County, MI

Ingham County is home to the state capital, Michigan State University, and a ring of townships and small towns around Lansing. That means state offices, student rentals, and family homes, sometimes all in one assignment.

We serve across the county for cases in the 30th Circuit, the Probate Court, the three district courts, and courts elsewhere in Michigan.

FAQ

Serving papers in Ingham County: common questions.

General information about Michigan court rules, not legal advice. Your attorney or the court clerk can answer questions about your specific case.

Who may serve process in Michigan?

Any legally competent adult who isn’t a party, or an officer of a corporate party, under MCR 2.103(A). That’s why law firms and individuals alike use a process server rather than serving papers themselves.

How do you serve a government agency?

MCR 2.105(G) lists who receives service for each type of public body. For example, a city is served through its mayor, clerk, or attorney. Tell us the exact agency and we’ll make sure the papers go to the right official.

Do I need the sheriff to serve my papers?

Usually not. A summons, complaint, or subpoena can be served by a private process server. The exceptions in MCR 2.103(B) and (D) are writs of restitution, seizures of property, and anything requiring an arrest.

What happens if no one answers the door?

We record the date and time of each attempt and follow the attempt plan we agreed on with you. If the person can’t be reached, that record supports a motion for alternate service.

When does my summons expire?

91 days after the date it was issued, under MCR 2.102(D). Send us the issue date with your papers so we can work back from your deadline.
