FAQ

Serving papers in Lansing: common questions.

General information about Michigan court rules, not legal advice. Your attorney or the court clerk can answer questions about your specific case.

Which court handles my Lansing case?

City of Lansing district court matters go to the 54A District Court, and Ingham County circuit cases go to the 30th Circuit. For addresses in the Eaton or Clinton County parts of the city, check with the clerk. We can serve the papers either way.

How do you serve a state agency or city office?

MCR 2.105(G) names the officials who receive service for each kind of public body. Tell us the exact agency and we’ll deliver to the right person.

Do I need a sheriff instead of a process server?

Only for certain papers. MCR 2.103(B) and (D) reserve writs of restitution, property seizures, and anything requiring arrest for officers. A summons or subpoena can be served by a private process server.

How many attempts do you make?

The court rules don’t set a number. We agree on attempts and timing with you before starting.
